Bear – able humor? William Kotzwinkle”s The Bear Went Over the Mountain is a laugh-out-loud funny book. Hal Jam, a personified black bear, finds a manuscript left in the woods by a Maine Professor trying to write a bestseller. The bear dresses in a tie and suit, and goes off to the big city and success. No one notices that he’s a bear, but he does get compared to Hemingway. Kotzwinkle takes satiric shots at writers, publishers, and publicists – good-natured, unbelievable, good laughs.
Kotzwinkle usually writes for children, but this one is for adults.
